Firefighters Overcome Athen’s Inferno

Firefighters in Greece have claimed victory over a devastating wildfire that has ravaged the north of the capital, Athens, for over four days. “The situation has greatly improved, we currently have no active fronts in greater Athens,” a fire department spokeswoman told AFP on Tuesday. She added that firefighters would however remain on location to watch out for resurgences. The four-day-long wind-swept wildfires in northeast Athens scorched more than 20,000 hectares and completely destroyed scores of homes in the European country. According to a first estimate by the public works ministry in Greece, some 150 homes have also been “damaged” during the incident. The distinguishing of fires in northeast Athens has enabled water-bombers to be deployed to other blazes raging in Greece, such as Mount Kithaironas, west of Athens, and Karystos on the island of Evia.
