US President-elect Donald Trump has met with his former opponent, top Republican Mitt Romney, to discuss “various theaters in the world.”
The two long-time foes met privately in the clubhouse at Trump's golf course in Bedminster Township, New Jersey, on Saturday.
In the run-up to the US ۲۰۱۶ presidential election, Romney had described the real estate tycoon as “a phony, (and) a fraud."
The meeting was held as the future president was busy picking candidates for his cabinet and Romney was rumored to be a potential pick for the secretary of state.
“We had a far-reaching conversation with regards to the various theaters in the world where there are interests of the United States of real significance,” Romney told reporters after he emerged from the clubhouse.
The former governor of Massachusetts did not comment on his previous statements against the GOP nominee.
“We discussed those areas and exchanged our views on those topics. A very thorough and in-depth discussion in the time we had and appreciate the chance to speak with the president-elect and look forward to the coming administration.”
He also refused to discuss the possibility that he may be given the post of the secretary of the state.
As Romney was standing at the podium, the president-elect stood near the front door of the clubhouse, calling out, "It went great!"
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former UN ambassador John Bolton and former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) are other possible candidates for the top position.
According to the Trump team, all his meetings are not aimed at selecting cabinet members but some simply seek to solicit advice.
Some of Trump’s appointments have outraged Democrats as well as human rights activists.
The billionaire managed to gain an electoral victory in a shock election on November ۸ by beating Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
